Three dead, two injured after transit bus and pickup truck collide in Welland, Ont.

Three people are dead and two others are in hospital after an overnight collision in Welland, Ont.
Several first responder units including the Ontario Provincial Police Highway Safety Division, Welland Fire Department, Niagara EMS and Ornge responded to a collision involving a pickup truck and bus on Highway 58 in Welland, near Niagara Falls just after 10:20 p.m. on Saturday.
Officers determined that a pickup truck collided head-on with a transit bus and as a result, the pickup truck rolled over and burst into flames.
“I’m sad to say that the driver and two passengers that were in that vehicle were pronounced deceased on scene,” Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a broadcast video on the OPP’s X account.
The bus driver was airlifted to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. There were also two passengers on the bus at the time of the crash — one was taken to hospital with serious injuries while the other was assessed and released at the scene.
Both the driver and the passenger are in stable condition, according to the OPP.
“I just want to send out our deepest condolences,” Sanchuk continued in the video. “Everyone’s in our thoughts right now, that’s been affected by this tragedy.”
A portion of Highway 58 between Kleiner Street and Forks Road East was closed for several hours overnight and early Sunday morning as the OPP investigated the collision.
Police said they will release more information as it becomes available.
